The Power of preloved

Earlier this year Alice Ryan, the editor of Velvet Magazine, approached me about a feature for Second Hand September. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity.

Four sellers of preloved clothes were to be showcased and the brief was to curate just one outfit that epitomised your brand. What a hard choice to make from the Trash Chic rails. I love a mash up of colours, patterns and textures so went all out to embrace the maximalist, vibrant and quirky style that I am best known for.

I also needed a model. Enter Liz Barker who had come on board for the Rainbow Runway Fashion Show organised by Grand Arcade in support of Cambridge Pride. I am lucky to have many friends who love modelling my clothes and look absolutely stunning in them.

The shoot was great fun, as ever with Velvet Magazine. We used the lush Cambridge University Botanic Gardens which made the perfect backdrop for the colourful outfits. Bryony Smith @blush.and.bows was on hand for hair and makeup. The photograpy was in the safe hands of Luana Martignon @luanaburtonph

The other preloved sellers were Neon Leo, Community of Creatives and Brooks Clothes Agency. When you see the outfits curated I can guarantee you won't immediately think 'second hand'.

About the brand:

Jane Horwood is a lifelong recycler and upcycler of fashion. "The ethos of Trash Chic is 'Reclaim, Recycle, Reuse'. My preloved collection is not label-driven, and is a mix of high street, designer and customised clothes. I am drawn to strong colours and like to mismatch prints and patterns to create unexpected and exciting combinations. Trash Chic is all about playing around with your outfits, exploring different looks and styles, and adding sparkle to your wardrobe ... and life."

About the model:

Liz Barker is a writer, presenter and podcaster. "I have always worn preloved clothing. It started with pieces I got from my mum, that she saved from the 60s and 70s. I love putting different looks together, depending on my mood and the event - Trash Chic is the best for festival wear and cosy cashmere. It's all excellent quality and so reasonable. I am a huge fan of all things vintage. My home, my outfits, my life are all a reflection of past lives."

Here are some of the behind the scene shots I captured on the day:

When you're the editor of a magazine you need to be able to turn your hand to anything including using the light reflector.
